I have personally reduced my exposure to mainstream media, with occassional focused information gleamed from the internet keeping me as informed as I need to be on the "real" world.
That we don't pay attention to our thoughts, emotions, even body reactions as we watch CSI leads us to be ever less mindful and distressed. Your point of no one ever teaching us the effect of words is wonderful.
